Mark Reel- Tell us a little about the school.
-
Chad Newhard- IWU has 3000 students on our Marion campus. We are an NAIA program that competes in the Crossroads League
-
MR- Tell us a little about yourself and how you got to your school.
-
CN- I played at Grace College and have made several coaching stops along the way. I have coached at Glen Oaks CC, IPFW, Tabor College and now IWU. I have also been an associate scout for two MLB clubs. Getting an opportunity to coach in the League that I played in was always attractive to me and I have been blessed to get that opportunity at IWU.
-
MR- The question I get most frequently is “How do I get recruited?” What’s your advice?
-
CN- Get in touch with the coaching staff. Make sure you get the coaches [your] schedule (games, tournaments, showcases you may be attending, etc.) If you are interested in school, attending camps at the school if they are offered is a plus.
-
MR- What are your methods for finding players? Where do you look? What age do you begin evaluating kids as legitimate prospects? Is there a particular part of the year where you do the bulk of your recruiting?
-
CN- We start to look during a player’s junior year. Our school has a lot to offer so we attract student athletes from all over the US. We get out in the summer quite a bit and being able to evaluate the players’ ability level is important to us. We like to see each of our prospects play. We will get some recruits out of our camps, showcases, and games that we see.
-
MR- What is the best way for a player to get your attention?
-
CN- Play hard, have solid fundamentals, show a positive attitude, play with energy, and show you are a team first player.
-
MR- What attributes make for a successful baseball player at the collegiate level? Any attributes specific to your program?
-
CN- Commitment, work ethic, team first positive attitude, and ability level are important to any program. For us have an ability to be coachable and willingness to grow as a player and as a person.
-
MR- What are your school/program’s biggest selling points to potential recruits?
-
CN- We have a tremendous campus with first class facilities. We offer over 100 different degrees. We are a faith-based school that has a desire to see its students grow spiritually. We are interested in seeing players develop athletically and spiritually. We play competitive baseball and have had four guys since 2008 sign with MLB organizations, which includes Brandon Beachy, starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.
